The Bureau County Senior Center will be holding their annual Bake Sale in the Park on Friday, August 29, 2008 from 11AM to 1PM. The Senior Center is asking for bake goods to be brought either on Thursday August 28 or early Friday morning, August 29. Cookies, Cakes, Pies, & Candy are welcome. The Illinois Valley Youth Choirs announce their fall registration, which will be held in the L-P High School choral room. The choirs provide professional vocal instruction to girls and boys (with unchanged voices) in grades 3-12 by exploring choral music in fun and imaginative ways. Children are led to develop healthy singing techniques while becoming familiar with a wide variety of musical repertoire.
Voice-checks are informal and previous musical experience is not required. Registration will be Friday, September 5th in the evening and Saturday, September 6th in the morning. Please call Laurel at 815-223-4569 to schedule a 20 minute appointment.
Most new students will be placed in the Apprentice Choir, led by Mrs. Jill McLaughlin, which meets on Tuesdays from 5:00-6:15. Students with more experience may be placed in the Advanced Choir, led by Mrs. Christine Kelsey, which meets on Thursdays from 5:00-6:30. Choir placement is determined by the conductors after evaluating each child’s vocal readiness, maturity, and experience.
The Illinois Valley Youth Choir is a non-profit group which receives financial support from the Illinois Valley Fine Arts Trust and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. Students pay $65 tuition to cover the costs of music and instruction for the entire second semester (January through May.) Scholarships are available to those with financial need. The choir is also available for a limited number of public performances within the community. The next major concert is scheduled for December 7th at 4pm.
The choral room at L.P. High School is located in the rear, southwest corner of the main building. (Outside door #M19.) When coming to audition, follow the small driveway off of 8th Street (in Peru) that runs alongside the practice field.
